Training and adventure in Slovenia

by george on Jun.18, 2010, under Uncategorized

Since my last post in Barcelona at the Mare Nostrum, I headed to Canet in France for the third leg of the tour. I was dissapointed with my swimming. It wasn’t bad dont get me wrong, its just that I felt as if I was putting so much effort out and wasnt reaping the expected results. I was also fighting a cold and was growing weary from my recent hard training and racing.

I headed to Slovenia to train and stay with my friend Jernej. I have done this before the 2008 Olympics and the 2009 World Championships. I have grown to love this country and find it to offer a wonderful mental break with healthy distractions while also allowing me to train at the same time.

Here is a little bit of stroke work that I filmed in an attempt to fine tune some details after practice.

I headed to the Soca Valley on my first day here after an easy practice early in the morning. I ended up climbing in some snow high in the Alps which I found to be quite a novelty considering that we are in June. I even swam in a river that was fed by the melting snow. I then toured some WW1 bunkers, trenches and a museum. Over 1 million men died fighting in and around the valley in WW1. I just cant seem to wrap my mind around this number.

Today I ended up going canyoning. I had no idea what I was in for, I imagined it to be something like white water rafting without the raft. Boy was I wrong. Take a look below!! The water was 7 or 8 degrees Celsius, hence the heavy wet suits.

Tomorrow I am heading to France to compete in Carcasonne on Sunday,  I will post about it so please check back.
